Más de quinientos ciudadanos belgas se concentraron este domingo para manifestar en contra del acuerdo sobre la migración de la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) en Bélgica.
Los hechos se produjeron junto al edificio Berlaymont, la sede de la Comisión Europea, cuando varios de los participantes en la protesta lanzaron adoquines y vallas a los agentes.
El pacto migratorio de la ONU que ha firmado Bélgica y ha supuesto la ruptura del Gobierno federal.
Durante la manifestación la Policía respondió con gases lacrimógenos y un cañón de agua para dispersar a los manifestantes.
Según la agencia de noticias Belga, un cristal del edificio de la Comisión Europea también resultó dañado.
Un portavoz de la Policía de Bruselas indicó que 97 personas fueron detenidas, si bien no pudo precisar cuántos de esos individuos pasaron a disposición judicial.
De acuerdo con la Policía de Bruselas, 5.500 personas acudieron a la convocatoria, que en un primer momento había prohibido el ministro-presidente de la región de Bruselas, Rudi Vervoort.
El Consejo de Estado belga, un tribunal administrativo, suspendió la prohibición el viernes al considerar que el temor a los disturbios que pudiera ocasionar la marcha no justificaba su veto.
Entre los organizadores y asistentes a la manifestación contra el Pacto Migratorio de la ONU figuran la ultraderecha flamenca del partido Vlaams Belang, la Asociación de Estudiantes Católicos Flamencos (KVHV) y la Asociación de Estudiantes Nacionalistas (NSV).
El Pacto Migratorio de la ONU ha agitado recientemente la vida política belga, hasta el punto de que la formación nacionalista flamenca N-VA rompió la semana pasada la coalición de gobierno de la que era socia mayoritaria.
Antes de que se produjeran los enfrentamientos, cuando los manifestantes caminaban desde la estación central de Bruselas hasta la rotonda de Schuman, junto a la Comisión, donde estaba programada la concentración, se lanzaron petardos, según varios medios belgas.
En paralelo a esta manifestación, también se celebró una concentración de apoyo al pacto migratorio de la ONU a la que según la Policía de Bruselas acudieron 1.000 personas y en la que no se produjeron disturbios.
