Al menos 30 personas fallecieron en el naufragio de una embarcación de lujo que navegaba el Lago Victoria, situado entre Uganda, Tanzania y Kenia, informaron hoy fuentes policiales.

Los servicios de emergencia de Uganda trabajan desde ayer en la zona y se espera que el número de víctimas aumente a medida que progresa la búsqueda.

“30 muertos confirmados y 27 rescatados. Los equipos de la marina están haciendo todo lo que pueden para encontrar más cuerpos”, indicó hoy la Policía ugandesa a través de su cuenta de Twitter.

El barco continúa sumergido en el agua, a unos 200 metros de la orilla.

Según los medios locales, la cifra de rescatados alcanza en realidad las cuatro decenas, pero no todos los supervivientes han sido registrados por las fuerzas policiales.

“No estamos seguros de la lista de gente a bordo pero, por lo que hemos oído, es de más de 100”, señaló Deo Akiiki, portavoz de las fuerzas policiales que trabajan en la zona, según recogió el diario ugandés New Vision.

Entre los rescatados figuran personalidades de renombre local como la cantante Iryn Namubiru y el príncipe David Wasajja, hermano del rey de Buganda (Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, líder tradicional del pueblo Baganda, en Uganda).

“Estoy viva, a salvo y recibiendo atención médica pero muy traumatizada. Mis más profundos pensamientos para nuestros camaradas que no lo han conseguido y condolencias para sus familiares”, transmitió Namubiru a través de su Twitter este domingo.

Por el momento se desconocen las causas del siniestro pero algunos testigos apuntan a la hipótesis de que la embarcación iba sobrecargada.

La nave partió de KK Beach y en ella se celebraba una fiesta.

Este es el segundo naufragio mortal en el Lago Victoria en cuestión de pocos meses.

El pasado septiembre el siniestro de un ferri en la parte tanzana dejó algo más de 200 muertos. EFE
